The centenary history of the word Monte Buono sul Trasimeno and its eco-compatible crops

Discover the magical atmosphere with an ancient flavor (1200-1500) that can be felt in the Agriturismo Le Case Rosse in Monte Buono”.

LE CASE ROSSE DI MONTEBUONO

The origins

From the ancient cartographies of the historical diocesan archive of Perugia, it emerges that the intensive agriculture of olive trees, vines, cereals, legumes and fodder in the locality of Montebuono (Magione, PG) was practiced in the ancient "Pieve di San Rufino di Ripola a Montebuono” (Mentioned in 1027), on the southern (south-west) shore of Lake Trasimeno.

The fortes

Property of the Perugian Monastery of San Pietro later transformed into a fortress, in 1403 it was occupied by exiles from Perugia aided by papal and Florentine troops.
Today, local archaeological evidence exists of the ancient fortress and, right in our Agriturismo, it consists of a sandstone tower with slits rich in travertine cornerstones (reused) and a fortified stone house equipped with numerous defensive slits (from which comes the name of the apartments "La Torre antica" and "Feritoie".

Let's cultivate love for life

In our family, starting from the last century, doctors have prevailed, at least two per generation, so over the last two generations six doctors have cultivated a love for life in all its natural expressions both in the animal world and vegetable.
Traditional agriculture does not respect all eco-sustainability criteria that are sacrificed on the altar of productivity.
Traditional agriculture does not respect all the eco-sustainability criteria which are sacrificed on the altar of productivity. Precisely the growing environmental sensitivity on the planet explains why we have been among the pioneers of organic agriculture in Umbria for 15 years..

The farm

The decision to abandon the more profitable traditional agriculture to dedicate ourselves to organic farming was then enriched in 2002 by the creation of an agritourism that allows us to share our ethical choices with others. The “Le Case Rosse di Monte Buono” Agritourism was born where guests must feel part of a natural system where human intervention is limited to following the natural cycles where interventions in agriculture are biocompatible, where love for our horses coincide with the delicate sharing of their freedom when they lend themselves to hippotherapy to  gift of a physiological form of equestrian rehabilitation through the horse.

The family is all involved in various capacities in welcoming the guests of the farmhouse and does not miss the opportunity to put into practice and illustrate the basic principles of the Mediterranean diet, but also of the vegetarian and vegan diet.

The members of our family where there are many doctors often make themselves available free of charge for consultations and opinions and are the guarantee that on our farm all the health and hygiene aspects that may concern our guests are guaranteed.

The crops

Organic cultivation and respect for agricultural biodiversity in the rotation of organic crops are an onerous ethical choice but are supported by the desire to integrate a natural system where human intervention is limited to following its circadian rhythms.

The vineyard

We grow the vines of the red Sangiovese and Merlot grapes and the white grapes Grechetto and Chenin Blanc..

The production phases

After a careful selection, the bunches are delicately placed in small boxes and delivered to the cellar where the grapes are pressed immediately after harvesting.
On September 14, 2020, the story of this Merlot wine began, which we named Sinergia.

“It was a good meeting and certainly a good start,” says our cellar manager Anna Gattobigio, “because the grapes were beautiful, intact, sweet”.

Once the destemming was carried out, the peels and juice immediately reached container No. 12, and the following evening the fermentation began The temperature was carefully controlled and kept constant at 25°C and the mass homogenized 2 times a day.

This wise initial care produced a constant decrease in the concentration of fructose as desired to obtain the best result. Every day the mostimeter gave reassurances on the quality of the future wine

On 22 September 2020, when the sugar had reached the desired concentration (equal to 10.10 grams/litre), the delastage was carried out. The must was completely separated from the skins and immediately reinserted to cover the skins themselves.

This intervention is very important for the reactivation of the yeasts and the oxygenation of the must. This intervention is very important for the reactivation of the yeasts and the oxygenation of the must.

On October 3, 2020, the sugar had completely transformed into alcohol, but we decided to wait another 4 days before separating the skins from the wine because the pomace still had a lot of goodness to give it… it was a very rich grape in both color and aroma !!

On October 7, 2020, after 23 days of coexistence in the tank, the racking was carried out and the former must was finally named New Wine

“Its intense and impenetrable purple color immediately bewitched me and every time it was decanted into another barrel, its clarity and reflections increased” says Anna.

Tastings then followed and time continued to enrich the wine.

In May it was ready to be bottled.

It was a beautiful journey that we took together trying to satisfy the needs of the wine which expressed itself in its splendor. Now another path has begun, perhaps even more interesting, “refinement in the bottle”: interweaving of aromas and flavors that will give emotions and thoughts to those who want to encounter this infinite magic.

Thanks and credit to those who cultivated and looked after the grapes with such passion, the wine will give us back its gratitude for having loved and respected it

The olive grove

We cultivate the 1500 centuries-old olive trees of the Leccino, Frantoio and Moraiolo varieties in a quantity of no less than 30% Dolce Agogia.

Centuries-old olive trees adorn our three hills close enough to Lake Trasimeno to enjoy its warmth but protected from strong temperature variations.
